Decent Metal Guitar Tone in Logic Pro X

Hey everyone! Felt like sharing the metal tone I use for demos. I made it using only plugins that ship with Logic.

Logic

First, let me say I’m not exactly a professional. I just screwed around a lot and this is what I came up with; sorry for the sloppy playing. You can download the .cst here (adf.ly link, because that’s the most money I’ll ever make from music at this rate haha).

Anyway, I’ll go through everything in the signal chain. There’s not much. First in the chain are a tuner and noise gate, which I won’t bother showing you because they don’t matter. That’s just for me jamming out riffs, because I also use this patch in MainStage.

This is the only pedal in the Pedalboard plugin. On the leads in the sample clip above, there is also a delay pedal in the pedalboard. I should probably put that in between the ampsim and the cabsim but it sounds okay as it is. I use the Grit pedal as a tubescreamer, because there is no classic green TS in Logic. It tightens up the low end and adds a bit of gain. The other distortion pedals in Logic were all too muddy.

As you can see here, not a whole lot of tone shaping going on. I basically just let the Rectifier sim do its thing. I have the cab’s mic position set all the way to the front and about 1.2 dots off centre. In this position it sounds nearly identical to the Mesa Oversize Rectifier 4x12 impulse I made from my real rig.

And that’s the whole signal chain (minus iZotope Ozone 5 on the master bus). This particular tone works better on my Seymour Duncan Livewire Dave Mustaine pickups than my 7-string EMG 81s. I always track with this tone because it highlights flaws a lot better than other ampsims that I’ve tried (LePou mostly.. which do sound better though). This tone is highly dependent on your ability to play tightly. When I first started messing around with ampsims I was horrified at how bad they sounded, but then my technique got a bit better.

Have fun and good luck!

You can transpose or fine tune the pitch of audio regions in tracks that you've already recorded to match the pitch of the instruments in the project. For example, if you've changed the key of a project, some of your existing vocal tracks might be out of tune.

The audio region in the Tracks area and the Audio Tracks Editor shows how much you're transposing the region in semi-tones. If you change the pitch of a region during playback, you hear the changes immediately.
